The Roanoke River is considered by many fishermen to be one of the best fishing places anywhere. The area is known as the Rockfish Capital of the World. With continued good management and fishermen's common sense, rockfish should be in high supply for many years to come in the river. The best times for fishing for the striped bass on the Roanoke River are from mid-March to mid-June. Regulations for fishing are constantly monitored by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to assure that the fishing industry is not abused. There are numerous fishing guides who provide service for fishing in the area.

Both lakes provide facilities for all types of water sports, boating, skiing, etc. There are numerous commercial and privately-owned boat landings around the shoreline, and public beaches offer camping facilities. There are six state-maintained wildlife public boat landings, and a Boy Scout camping area. There is also a unique youth camp, Camp Willow Run, located in Littleton on Lake Gaston using a 19th century railroad theme.

Culture:

Originally settled by Indians, the Roanoke Valley is rich in heritage and history. The Halifax Resolves were America's first steps towards independence. This event is commemorated each April with the Halifax Day celebration in Historic Halifax. Other annual events also reflect our past. The Haliwa-Saponi Indians celebrate with a festive Pow-Wow that culminates in the crowning of a new Indian princess. Harvest Days are a time to enjoy fabulous country cooking; those not raised on the farm get the opportunity to harvest peanuts and cotton, two of Halifax County's most important cash crops.

The Lakeland Arts Center in Littleton offers a variety of classes in dance, music, drama, and art. The Arts Center also produces a number of their own diner theatre productions and hosts professional touring groups and concerts. Dance and Musical Theatre Camp is offered for young people in the summer.

The Halifax County Arts Council, with offices located in the Old Navigation Canal pumping station, offers a variety of plays, exhibitions, competitions and concerts yearly.
