The department has 43 full time employees and 3 permanent part time employees dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the infrastructures and appearances of Roanoke Rapids. The operating budget of the department for fiscal year 2003-2004 is three million dollars.
Fleet maintenance provides preventive and repair maintenance to 250 pieces of rolling stock. The division is staffed with 3 mechanics, a parts room supervisor and a superintendent.
The Street division is responsible for the construction, repair and maintenance of 90 miles of municipal streets and 17 miles of alleys, also storm drainage and street sweeping. The division repairs all utility cuts, asphalt cuts, curb and gutter and driveways. New driveway aprons require a $15.00 driveway permit, which can be obtained at the Public Works office.
Residential rollouts are collected once per week at the street or alley. Collection days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Each residential home is provided with one 96 gallon rollout cart. Each additional cart may be purchased for $51.00, and an additional annual fee of $ 49.45. Small businesses may purchase a rollout for $51.00 plus a monthly fee of $14.38
Public Works defines refuse as yard waste, limbs, shrubs, leaves, grass clippings, white goods, brown goods and junk. These items are to be placed at the streets and alleys for collection on the same day as the rollout cart. For collection services of refuse over the minimum load, and for such items as construction and building materials, the Public Works Department will charge a fee of $10.00 - $35.00, depending on the truck size, plus the cost of disposal at the county landfill. Please call the office for scheduling of this service.
