Police Officer


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be high school graduate or hold GED certificate
  • Must be able to furnish documentary evidence showing the applicant has met the education requirement for the criminal justice field of expected employment
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principle relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship of having had a similar position for one to two years
  • Possession of valid driver's license with an active and consecutive 3-year satisfactory verifiable driving history.  Driving history will be checked, (Must be able to be licensed in the state of North Carolina)
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training & Standards Commission

Essential Duties and Tasks:

  • Patrol streets by foot or in police vehicle; examine premises including unoccupied residences and commercial properties; detect unusual conditions; maintain surveillance and observation of stolen cars, missing persons, suspects; report public safety issues such as dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights or other hazardous conditions.
  • Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; complete calls by assessing true nature of situation and taking applicable measures to resolve the situation.
  • Investigate traffic accidents, issue traffic citations, direct traffic and participate in other emergency operations.
  • Serve warrants; apprehend and process criminal suspects and transport to magistrate and/or County detention facilities.
  • Prepare records and reports.
  • Advise the public on laws and local ordinances.

Firefighter Applicant Pool

The City of Roanoke Rapids is accepting Firefighter applications to establish an eligibility list (applicant pool) from which selections will be made as positions become available. 

An employee in this position performs general fire fighting work including but not limited to preparing equipment for responding to fire calls, fighting fires, fire salvage and equipment/ fire vehicle maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be of good character, be in good physical condition and pass a drug test
  • Must be high school graduate or hold a GED certificate
  • Must have or be able to obtain a North Carolina or Virginia Class B driver's license
  • Must have WorkKeys Silver Certificate (or higher) | Contact Halifax Community College for more information (252-536-6393)
  • Firefighter experience preferred but not required

Essential Duties and Tasks:

  • Provides responses to fires and emergency calls; participates in hazardous material response and prevention programs.
  • Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fire including rescue, entry, ventilation and salvage work.
  • Performs routine maintenance and servicing of equipment including washing and waxing trucks, checking batteries, checking fuel and oil levels, cleaning and drying hoses, inspecting hose and hose connections, etc.
  • Participates in continuing education training programs.
  • Reports facility maintenance, radio, vehicle and equipment problems to appropriate level of authority.
  • Attends in-service classes to maintain current knowledge of fire suppression and emergency medical technology.
  • Participate in physical trainings.

Street Maintenance Worker

Public Works

An employee in this class must be able to perform a variety of semi-skilled and manual labor tasks related to the maintenance of streets, storm drains, driveways, cemetery and public buildings and grounds.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

  • performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as cutting lawns, painting, using power hand equipment, repairing driveways, replacing storm drain pipe, repairing curb and gutters.
  • work may include performing various horticultural and ground maintenance tasks, building maintenance tasks and operating some light equipment.
  • responds to public requests and questions with courtesy and tact.
  • operates all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as tractors, hand tools and mowers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • must be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate
  • must have good communication and customer service skills
  • must have a valid NC Driver's License

Property Maintenance Worker

Public Works

Essential Duties and Tasks:

  • Work as a member of a crew to perform trades construction and repair work at various grounds and facilities.
  • Repair and maintain interior and exterior lighting; install and replace electrical fixtures, switches and outlets.
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing fixtures, drains, valves and other required maintenance to restrooms and kitchen facilities.
  • Repairs, remodels or replaces various carpentry tasks including walls, cabinets, doors, windows, floors and more.
  • Paint a variety of surfaces, repair carpet, move furniture, set up rooms and facilities for functions.
  • Participate in the City's safety programs and adhere to safety procedures and policies of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of building trades and/or grounds maintenance.
  • Physical ability to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
  • Must be able to physically perform basic life functions including but not limited to climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping.
  • Must be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

(Part Time) Public Works Worker

Public Works

An employee in this position performs skilled technical and trades work in the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment.  Job duties include but are not limited to grass cutting, leaf collection, street sign maintenance, trash collection and other duties necessary in the Public Works Department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate
  • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver's License

An employee in this position may include any of the Parks & Recreation facilities:

 -  Chaloner Recreation Center       - Canal Museum                 -  Roanoke Rapids Public Library

 -  Kirkwood Adams Community Center         - Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall 

This employee will supervise scheduled activities and is the City's point of contact during these activities.

Hours are mainly evenings and weekends according to activities that are scheduled.
